  • Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party has called on the country’s electoral board to cancel Sunday’s referen

AFP also said that showing no sign of pulling his punches, Erdogan said Turkey could hold further referendums on its European Union bid and re-introducing the death penalty.

"We will consider appeals on the results of the referendum today", Guven said as quoted by the NTV broadcaster.

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated with the people and government of Turkey on the successful conclusion of the country's referendum on Monday. "Before our administration took over, there had been many decisions approving the validity of unstamped ballots". President Trump reiterated US support to Turkey as a strategic partner and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, and welcomed Turkey's contributions to the counter-ISIS campaign.

The opposition has listed a series of irregularities, but has been particularly outraged by an electoral board decision announced late Sunday to accept ballots that didn't bear the official stamps used to verify they are genuine, as required by Turkish law.

Erdogan argues that concentration of power in the presidency is needed to prevent instability. The assessment drew a harsh rebuke from Erdogan and criticism from Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

The immediate danger now lies in the fact that nearly half of the country is nearly entirely against Erdogan and the new constitution, which could spell political turmoil and greater instability all the way up until the issue is laid to rest, one way or another, in Turkey's first presidential election under the new constitution in 2019. The president will also be allowed to keep his ties to a political party. This would allow Erdogan to rejoin the governing AKP he co-founded, or to lead it.

Meanwhile, OSCE monitors were seen entering the Supreme Electoral Board headquarters.

The article caused a sensation in Turkey and was slammed by the Turkish authorities in a statement in which it asked the tabloid "to make amends for the lack of respect shown to our president". "We look forward to OSCE/ODIHR's final report, which we understand will take several weeks".

Gianni Pittella, the Italian leader of the Socialist grouping in the European Parliament, said: 'We've always been very reluctant to ensure a visa-free regime to Turkey.

The White House nodded to that in its statement Monday night; "President Trump thanked President Erdogan for supporting this action by the United States, and the leaders agreed on the importance of holding Syrian President Bashar al-Assad accountable", it read.
