Liberal Democrats will not enter into a coalition government

  • Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron launched his campaign to seize Vauxhall from Kate Hoey alongside candidate George Turner today

The U.K.'s Liberal Democrats won't be part of any coalition after June's general election and plans to become the main opposition by attracting voters who want to stay in the European Union, its leader Tim Farron told The Observer.

Mr Farron was asked to clarify his beliefs when on ITV's Peston on Sunday, saying "being gay is not a sin", before adding that he was "getting tired" of the line of questioning.

But the devout Christian faced further questions over whether he viewed gay sex as a sin, insisting that his "personal faith" was a private matter.

His comments have raised fresh criticism from a number of politicians and commentators, including Labour MP Liz Kendall and Conservative former cabinet minister Michael Gove, who were in the same studio listening to his answers.

With Mrs May promising to "make a success" of Brexit, Lib Dem leader Tim Farron has emerged as one of Westminster's leading Europhiles.

Mr Farron is hoping for an unlikely win in a constituency Labour won by more than 12,000 last time but which is held by Brexit-supporting Kate Hoey on a strongly Remain patch

However, closer inspection shows that instead of a vast stadium a la Trump or Clinton, Farron was in fact speaking at a church hall. And in this country, maybe it appears you have to pretend you haven't got one to be taken seriously. But the fact that I haven't got a figure in my head should tell you something about how we're beginning to expand the boundaries of what is possible. I think that's pretty offensive and will rightly anger a lot of people.

Reacting to the interview, Kendall said on the programme: "I think a lot of people will be appalled that he couldn't bring himself to say that gay sex is not a sin".

Gove added: "I agree with Liz; it would have been perfectly possible of him to say 'of course it's not a sin, it's how people love each other'". I'm a churchgoer too.

However, Robert Peston wanted to know if the politician believes the act of gay sex is a sin, rather than the sexual preference.

"Paul Blomfield campaigned for remain but has let his constituents down, abandoned his principles and voted against the best interests of the people he represents". And he has done so and he has done so in a very liberal way.
