Texas Police Officer Fired for Fatally Shooting Jordan Edwards

09 May, 2017, 00:11 | Author: Priscilla Morrison

After the high-profile killing of a young Black man, Jordan Edwards, the police officials of Balch Springs, Texas announced that they terminated Roy Oliver, the officer who fired at a moving vehicle and fatally shot the 15-year-old.

Mr Oliver opened fire with his rifle as the teenagers were driving away, hitting Jordan in the front passenger seat.

Originally, Oliver had claimed that the vehicle was moving backwards toward him in an "aggressive manner", but the police department later corrected that account after an investigation was completed and noted that the auto was actually moving away from Oliver when he fired into it. Police chief Jonathan Haber said the decision was made after discoveries were made during the internal investigation.

"Chief Haber said the action violated several department policies, and said county investigations continue". Haber previously said the department was getting threats on social media in response to the shooting.

"The magnitude of his awful actions can not be overstated", said a statement released from the family of Jordan Edwards.

The Dallas County district attorney's public integrity unit, and the Dallas County Sheriff's Department are reviewing the case.It is unclear if there will be criminal charges against Oliver. "This has happened far too often", said Jordan Edwards' family's attorney Lee Merrit during a press conference Monday. Edwards and the others in the auto that he was traveling in were trying to leave the party when Oliver fired into the moving vehicle.

Now that Oliver has been fired, the Edwards family wants him arrested and charged with murder. His attorney Cindy Stormer released a statement of her own saying Oliver is not commenting right now."The incident is recent and still being investigated". "The officers who extended this nightmare for those children ought to be properly reprimanded".

"Our family is working hard to deal with both the loss of our beloved Jordan and the lingering trauma it has caused our boys", the family statement said. Jordan's older brother who was driving the auto was detained overnight without reason and didn't learn of his brother's death until the next day. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, a week after his death.

He acknowledged then that the vehicle was moving away from officers when Oliver fired the shots and said the officer's actions were not consistent with the department's "core values". The TLBC will continue to work in Austin and around the state to build healthy relationships between African American and local police departments. "That was exclusively on me. In a rush to get the information out, to be transparent", he said. "Not only have Jordan's brothers lost their best friend, they witnessed firsthand his violent, senseless murder".
