Due to nearly a full elimination of recorded Zika cases, Brazil has just announced on Thursday that the virus is no longer an official public health crises.

Kadyrov has been accused of major human rights abuses and running Chechnya as a mafia-like fiefdom. After a delay, Russian investigators have said they are probing the allegations.

The virus was reported in dozens of countries and many travellers cancelled their trips to Zika-infected places.

Though typically a mild infection in adults, Zika virus infection can cause a pattern of severe birth defects known as Congenital Zika Syndrome when passed from pregnant women to their unborn children.

Travel warnings issued by governments including the United Kingdom caused travellers, particularly pregnant women most at risk, to cancel trips to affected countries, while revelations Zika could be sexually transmitted heightened concern.

In response to the outbreak, Brazil launched a campaign targeted at eradicating mosquitos in the country. "The Health Ministry and other involved organs will keep up their fight against zika, dengue, and chikungunya, as well as the states and cities", said Adeilson Cavalcante, the secretary for health surveillance at the Ministry. Microcephaly due to Zika infection can be found alone or in conjunction with other birth defects. The group gathered to discuss the current state of the Zika virus threat and determine what strategies and policies will best mitigate the threat.

"The important thing now is that we don't forget the victims", said Melo.

The Guardian reports that during the 2016 Olympics, the threat of the Zika virus was at its peak.
