  • Netflix will no longer work on rooted Android devices

Because version 5.0 of Netflix's app relies more on Google's Widevine digital rights management to prevent piracy, the video streaming service has to make modified devices incompatible. In a statement Netflix confirmed that users with rooted phones may not even see the Netflix app show up in the Play Store.

The newest version of Netflix's Android app will not officially support rooted and unlocked Android devices, the company said recently. Others might root or unlock their devices for deleting some software that is built in the device.

A few years ago while freelancing, I wrote a bunch of guides for rooting specific Android phones, and the steps you needed to go through for each one. If not, Android Policesuggests a workaround of directly downloading Netflix APKs to receive the latest updates on a blocked device.

The Netflix app can be downloaded from the Play Store only on phones that fully comply with the security requirement prescribed by Android. Now, majority will have to choose to keep their root access and watch things as they unfold. The company has confirmed that devices that are not "Google-certified or have been altered" are no longer capable of accessing the mobile service.

Fox orders Marvel drama The Gifted to series
The show focuses on a suburban couple whose lives are rocked by the discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced on the run, Fox says, the family connects with an underground society of mutants "and must fight to survive".

Netflix said the version 5.0 upgrade was created to prevent piracy, and that the change is about copy protection.

Smartphone users with the Android OS can run into trouble with the Netflix app disappearing from their Google Play Store. It can identify devices running or not running in the Trusted Execution Environment (TEE).

Users of rooted devices, though, will be familiar with sideloading APKs. If you've got the app installed already or sideloaded it on your rooted device via an APK file, it will work just fine. This also includes the devices that have an unlocked bootloader. But when you do so, you'll lose all improvements made by Netflix.
