North Korea says ready to deploy, mass produce new missile

The launch marked the country's second missile test in a little more than a week as the country continues to defy orders for it to reign in its nuclear and missile program.

On Sunday afternoon, the North test-fired a ballistic missile, which flew more than 500 kilometers.

The incursion came with tension already high on the Korean peninsula after the North's test-launch of a ballistic missile test on Sunday which Pyongyang said proved advances in its pursuit of building a nuclear-tipped weapon that can hit US targets.

Turkey condemned North Korea's latest missile test on Monday and called on the isolated state to stop its "provocative behaviour".

Speaking to reporters ahead of a closed-door UN Security Council meeting, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley also made clear that Washington would only talk to North Korea once it halted its nuclear programme. Analysts said that test showed gave North Korea critical information on developing a re-entry vehicle for nuclear warheads and showed Pyongyang had a missile capable of striking the United States territory of Guam.

The test came one week after Pyonyang successfully tested another type of missile that it boasted was capable of reaching the USA armed with a nuclear warhead.

If the United States "persists in anti-DPRK sanctions without understanding its rival, the (Trump) administration will have to take full responsibility for the ensuing catastrophic consequences", he warned.

The United States Pacific Command "detected and tracked" the missile that was sacked by North Korea at 8.59am BST and landed in the Sea of Japan.

"At the same time, we hope all parties can maintain restraint, not be influenced by every single incident, . persist in carrying out Security Council resolutions on North Korea and persevere with the resolution of the issue through peaceful means, dialogue and consultation". The missile launched on Sunday reached an altitude of 560 kilometres (347 miles), said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing office rules.

"This system, last tested in February, has a shorter range than the missiles launched in North Korea's three most recent tests", a White House official said.

South Korea's military fired warning shots after it spotted an unidentified object flying from North Korea across the Demilitarized Zone that divides the two countries, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Solid-fuel missiles have their fuel loaded in them before being moved into place, allowing them to be launched faster and with more secrecy. Liquid-fuel missiles, on the other hand, are generally fueled at the launch site in a process that can last an hour and requires fueling and other vehicles.

North Korea a week earlier had successfully tested a new midrange missile - the Hwasong 12 - that it said could carry a heavy nuclear warhead. That makes then easier to spot and easier to destroy than the solid-fuel variety.

Kim said there's also a possibility that the North is conducting engine tests and other experiments as it pushes for the development of a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile that could potentially reach the USA mainland.
