FBI misses deadline to turn over Comey memos on President Trump

  • Benjamin Wittes discusses Comey

Former FBI Director James Comey ended the Hillary Clinton email investigation last summer amid worries that the credibility of the bureau and the investigation itself would be damaged because of a false email planted by the Russians.

The Post first reported the request, which covers materials such as emails, phone records and documents dating to Trump's first days as a candidate in July 2015.

The unidentified officials told CNN that Comey feared that if the false information became public it would undermine the investigation as well as the Justice Department itself; Comey evidently believed it would be too hard to disprove such an accusation in the midst of a campaign without giving up intelligence sources and methods.

This document - combined with news of Lynch's private meeting with Bill Clinton on a Phoenix, Arizona tarmac - led Comey to make his fateful decision to end the investigation on his own. Comey, however, conveniently fails to note that even without any specific intent, Clinton's extreme carelessness was also deemed to be statutory espionage. Comey did not consult with Lynch beforehand, and the speech broke Federal Bureau of Investigation protocol to never comment on closed cases where no charges are brought.

After Comey said that, The Washington Post reported this week, Trump asked Daniel Coats, director of national intelligence, and Michael Rogers, director of the National Security Agency, to publicly say there was no evidence of such collusion.

The Russian intelligence at issue purported to show that then-Attorney General Lynch had been compromised in the Clinton investigation.

Qatar says state news agency hacked
Qatar is wary of Iran, but is not aligned with Saudi Arabia and the UAE on the issue, in part because of a shared major gas field. The agency's official Twitter account has also been attacked.

Much has been said and written about the head-spinning circumstance of having the very same people who only months ago demanded that Comey resign or be removed from office now feigning outrage over the news that he was sacked. He is now visiting the Middle East but Special Counsel Mueller is now officially on the job investigating the charge of Russian intervention in the 2016 US election.Schiff also echoed Brennan's assertion that individuals in Trump's inner circle may have aided Russian government officials without even realizing it.

Those inquiries now include scrutiny of Kushner, according to the newspaper.

According to CNN, Comey was not as concerned about whether the information was fake, but about whether the report was going to be released by the Russians. Why would he publicly condemn the Russian Federation investigation before and after firing Comey?

The Washington Post reports that the FBI is investigating meetings that President Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, had in December with Russian officials.

"The American people deserve answers and the truth regarding Russian meddling in our democracy and President Trump's ties to Russia", he said in a statement.
