Trump says US will abandon global climate accord

02 June, 2017, 07:08 | Author: Kristopher Anderson

President Trump has announced that the U.S. will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, the 2015 worldwide accord by which 195 nations agreed to limit greenhouse gas emissions in order to prevent global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

US supporters of the pact said any pullout by Trump would show that the United States can no longer be trusted to follow through on global commitments.

President Emmanuel Macron of France repeated that belief in an English-language speech from the Elysee presidential palace, unprecedented from a French president in an address at home.

But Trump didn't seem all that committed to opening up a new round of talks, saying of getting a deal, "if we can, that's great". The White House said the USA will stop contributing to the United Nations Green Climate Fund and will stop reporting carbon data as required by the Paris accord, although domestic regulations require that reporting anyway. Withdrawing would leave the United States aligned only with Russian Federation among the world's industrialized economies.

Obama broke his recent silence on Thursday at nearly the exact time Donald Trump announced the USA will leave the Paris Climate Agreement.

A formal withdrawal would take years, experts say, a situation that led the president of the European Commission to speak dismissively of Trump on Wednesday.

It's important to remember that the U.S.is also the second largest emitter of carbon and greenhouse gases in the world and so the decision to go on full steam ahead, without an eye toward renewables, clean energy or new standards could result in significantly more pollution from the US that arguably impacts people in other countries.

"For the exclusive benefits of other countries, leaving American workers, who I love, and tax payers to observe the cost in terms of job loss, low wages, shattered factories and vastly diminish economic production".

Johnson says the treaty reached during Barack Obama's presidency put America at a disadvantage by forcing the United States to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while allowing countries such as China and India to increase their own use. "The world can continue to count on Europe for global leadership in the fight against climate change".

"The Paris Agreement allows each party to forge its own path to contributing to the goals of preventing unsafe climate change".

"Also in the USA, the states have the environmental mandates, not the feds". The automaker highlighted its development of the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle with 238 miles of range on a single charge and a net price of less than $30,000.

Trump announced the decision at a press conference on Thursday.

Jim Cooper tweeted, "Withdrawing from the Paris Agreement is an abdication of USA leadership and a moral failure to our kids and grandkids". While traveling overseas last week, Trump was repeatedly pressed to stay in the deal by European leaders and the pope.

Such activity actually slowed in 2016, with total global investment in renewables off by about one-fourth to about $242 billion, according to a United Nations report. The pullout will align the United States with Syria and Nicaragua as the world's only non-participants in the accord.

Russian Federation joined the chorus speaking out for the climate accord.

The eight stories under the website's main header were all related, warning about the consequences of Trump's decision.

And that might help explain why, when Gallup pollsters called Americans in May and asked them to name the most important problem facing the country today, just 2 percent said the environment and/or pollution. Calculations suggest withdrawal could result in emissions of up to 3 billion tons of additional carbon dioxide a year - enough to melt ice sheets faster, raise seas higher and trigger more extreme weather.
