Ex-FBI director Comey to testify June 8 before Senate committee

The Committee announced on May 19 that Comey would testify after Memorial Day.

The committee said on Thursday Mr Comey will testify in an open session, followed by a close session.

Trump's comment to Comey was said to refer to the investigation of Flynn as part of the FBI's larger Russian Federation probe.

The former NSA director had a remarkably short tenure.

Amid a political firestorm touched off by Comey's firing, the Justice Department appointed a special counsel last month to take the lead on the Russian Federation investigation. However, he will be able to provide details about his firing and conversations he had with the president.

Comey is expected to be asked about conversations in which Trump reportedly pressured him to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, one of several Trump associates who are drawing scrutiny about Russian Federation and last year's us election.

Comey has spoken privately with special counsel Robert Mueller to work out the parameters for his testimony to ensure there are no legal entanglements as a result of his public account. In recent weeks and months, a grand jury has issued subpoenas requesting records related to Flynn's businesses. The White House has denied those characterizations. His lawyer, Jamie Gorelick, has said Kushner still plans to cooperate.

Comey should shed more light on whether the president is the subject of an FBI investigation into Russian election meddling, Graham said.

Mr Trump has denied any collusion between Russian Federation and his campaign and has questioned claims by United States intelligence that an operation authorised by Mr Putin including hacking, fake news and propaganda attempted to influence the election.

"As you heard [national security adviser H.R.] McMaster and [Homeland Security chief John] Kelly say over this weekend, they're not concerned", she said. The requests were made by former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan, former national security adviser Susan Rice and Samantha Power, the former USA representative to the United Nations, according to a congressional staffer, who was not authorized to disclose the information and spoke on condition of anonymity. Those agencies concluded in January that Putin had directed a Russian "influence campaign" involving cyberattacks and disinformation meant to tilt the November election in Trump's favor.

It is reasonable to conclude, the source added, that Comey did not think any of Trump's individual actions constituted obstruction of justice.

People are anxiously awaiting this occasion, given the potential consequences for Donald Trump and his administration.

Controversy erupted again this week after the Republican head of the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes, approved subpoenas to the CIA, FBI and National Security Agency for information relating to the "unmasking" of the names of Trump campaign advisers inadvertently picked up in top-secret foreign communications intercepts.

A week after the firing, the New York Times reported that Comey had kept a contemporary record of his interactions with the president.

Palestinian leaders cheered the move and said it improved the atmosphere for future negotiations by demonstrating Trump's seriousness about the process.
