'Pirates of the Caribbean' tops box office, 'Baywatch' sinks

The movie was produced under a massive $230 million budget, but if its trajectory is anything like On Stranger Tides, it will end up doing much better internationally than domestically.

The first place finish also can't cover up a serious case of franchise fatigue.

The long weekend's other major release, from Comcast Corp.'s (NASDAQ: CMCSA) Paramount, is "Baywatch", billed as a comedy based on the 1990s TV show.

Production companies seize the opportunity of coming holidays to promote their new movies so they can reside or hopefully reaches the top.

Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley return to the cast after skipping the last edition of Pirates. Meanwhile, the animated film The Boss Baby added $1.7 million, bringing its impressive domestic total to $169 million. The three-day estimate overseas is a whopping $208.4 million. BoxOfficeMojo predicted $23 million over three days for the picture, which cost $69 million to make.

This is keeping with the trend that we've seen with openings for previous movies in the franchise. Paramount was hoping to cash-in on the start of the summer with "Baywatch", but it looks like sandwiching the film between "Guardians 2" and "Wonder Woman" was a bad idea. Baywatch, which stars Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, and Priyanka Chopra, didn't do as well as the studio had hoped and only grossed around $22 million over the holiday weekend. Studio execs reportedly anxious that news of Depp's behavior could impact marketing for the $230 million film; global audiences have proven it's not the case.

Insiders close to both films blame Rotten Tomatoes, with Pirates 5 and Baywatch respectively earning 32% and 19% Rotten. Jay Scherick, David Ronn, Thomas Lennon, and Robert Ben Garant all have story credits. Guardians 2 saw a rough patch this weekend, and Alien: Covenant got nuked from space over its comparable Fridays. Analysts at BoxOfficePro.com were predicting $83 million over four days.

The film is expected to pass the $300 million mark on Monday, May 29.

This weekend, a number of films are meeting or passing milestones. We reported yesterday that this superhero sequel has already surpassed the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie ($333.1 million) after just four weeks at the box office, and its $788.5 million global haul has also surpassed the original's $773.3 million take.
