  • Mickelson to miss U.S. Open for daughter's graduation

Mickelson, whose birthday nearly always falls during U.S. Open week and turns 47 this June, has had family issues come up during the season's second major in the past.

Phil Mickelson will skip the U.S. Open to attend his daughter Amanda's high-school graduation, according to Karen Crouse of The New York Times.

It appears he will not break his duck at Erin Hills in 2017, due to the tournament's first round on June 15 clashing with his daughter Amanda's graduation from Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad, California.

Mickelson has notified tournament officials of his intention, but has yet to withdraw formally, making provisions for last-minute changes of plan.

The U.S. Open is the only major tournament that the soon-to-be-47-year-old has not won, and his last victory in any tournament was the British Open back in 2013.

"Mike and I both agree there's no sense in doing it right now, you never know what might happen, maybe something comes up with the commencement, maybe something comes up with the weather". It would have to be something unforeseen.
"I wanted to make sure that they had enough notice to accommodate it".

"As I look back on life, this is a moment I'll always cherish and be glad I was present", Mickelson said.

Mickelson landed his first major at the 2004 Masters and collected two more Green Jackets in 2006 and 2010 in addition to winning the PGA Championship in 2005. "It wasn't really something that we discussed, because it really wasn't much of a decision".

Mickelson finished second to Payne Stewart when the late golfer holed a 12-foot par putt on the final hole to edge him by a stroke; had Stewart missed, he and Mickelson would have had an 18-hole playoff to decide the tournament - on the day Amanda ended up being born.

He said Amanda is the school president and the valedictorian.
