British police rushed to an incident on London Bridge on Saturday after witnesses said a van ploughed into pedestrians and another witness told that she saw people with throats cut on London Bridge.

Another witness, who was in the cafe, said a man with a "massive knife" entered the restaurant at Borough Market, just south of the bridge, and stabbed two people inside. One, Holly Jones, told the BBC a white van veered off the road and struck as many as six people.

London police are treating injured people on a small street some 500 meters (yards) southwest of London Bridge, where witnesses say pedestrians were hit by a vehicle and police say they are responding to an incident.

Witnesses who were enjoying nights out in pubs and bars in the area were warned to barricade themselves indoors, while people on the streets surrounding London Bridge began to run for their lives.

London's transport authority said London Bridge rail station had been closed at the request of the police.The police were urging the public to run to a place of safety and hide if they can not."Please remain calm, but be alert and vigilant".

About two hours after the first reports of an incident, television images showed people walking away from the London Bridge area with their hands on their heads.

"A police officer was trying to put himself between them and the crowd. I don't know what to do".

"It looked to me that the van was aiming at the people".

"I told people to turn around and run away".
