  • Pakistan beat South Africa by 19 runs (DLS)

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday confirmed that the event technical committee of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 had approved Rumman Raees as a replacement player for Wahab Riaz in the Pakistan squad for the tournament.

Wahab injured his right ankle while bowling against India in Pakistan's campaign opener where he leaked a record number of runs - 84 in 8.1 overs - by any bowler in the tournament's history.

The 31-year-old sustained the injury whilst bowling during his side's crushing 124-run defeat against arch-rivals India at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham on Sunday. "Wahab will not be able to continue to play in remaining games of the Champions Trophy", the statement added. "Whoever plays better wins the match", said Raees.

Meanwhile, when asked about dream wicket, Raees said he would love to bowl to South Africa captain AB de Villiers and Indian batsmen Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.

Raees is yet to make one-day global debut for Pakistan but he has appeared for the team in T20 internationals.

After the match, at the press conference, coach Micky Arthur was asked about the bowler's fitness, to which he had said: "Alright, let's get something straight first off. Wahab Riaz was fully fit".

But Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed indicated Junaid Khan, already with the squad, would replace Wahab for his side's second Group B fixture against South Africa at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

A scan confirmed a "deltoid ligament complex", and Wahab will need two weeks to recover.
