  • Macron’s centrist Republic on the Move party would get between 350-380 seats out of 577

DUBLIN/LONDON When British Prime Minister Theresa May called a snap election in April, then-French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron was the one supposedly set to struggle to govern effectively with a parliamentary majority.

The Opinionway poll showed Macron's centrist Republic on the Move (LREM) party winning 30 percent of the vote in the first round, The Republicans party 21 percent, the far-right National Front 18 percent and the hard-left France Unbowed party 12 percent.

A party needs 289 seats to form a government in France, suggesting there is little prospect that Macron's party won't take up power later this month.

Macron's party is likely to win between 370 and 400 seats, according to a poll published Thursday by OpinionWay and Orpi for business daily Les Echos and Radio Classique.

Macron wants to revive a plan to set up a minimum price of 30 euros ($33.55) per ton of Carbon dioxide emissions, about six times the current European level, a French official said, asking not to be named as the matter isn't yet public.

That rose to 75% for those backing Mr. Macron's party.

Nearly half of LRM's candidates never ran in an election before. He is one of three conservatives serving in the new government of Macron - who was a minister in a Socialist government until he quit past year to launch his presidential bid.

The government has said it plans to fast-track legislation through parliament using executive decrees in a country where many see the cost of hiring and firing as a brake on growth.

To win in the first round Sunday, candidates must win an absolute majority of votes cast and the support of at least 25 percent of registered voters in their constituency.

After the Tories saw their Commons majority wiped out, President Donald Trump told the PM he looked forward to continued "close cooperation".

"Trump and Brexit could act as a catalyst for the Franco-German pairing".
