The son of an Indian immigrant who came out as gay will be the next Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister), after he was voted leader of the country's main governing party.

Bar an unexpected development, Varadkar will be voted in as prime minister when parliament next sits on June 13 and become the once-staunchly Catholic country's first openly gay premier and the youngest person ever to hold the office.

Born to an Indian immigrant father and an Irish mother, Varadkar is now serving as Ireland's Minister for Social Protection. In 2015, while Ireland was debating the Marriage Equality Bill, allowing same-sex couples to marry, Varadkar came out as gay on a radio show.

Varadkar secured 60 percent of the total weighted vote in the contest while his only rival Simon Coveney, minister for housing, planning, community and local government, only took 40 percent.

He's replacing Fine Gael's former leader Enda Kenny, who promised to resign following a poor performance in the last general election.

"Northern Ireland will leave the European Union with the United Kingdom, but we do think there should be special arrangements for Northern Ireland". "I'm not a half-Indian politician, or a doctor politician or a gay politician for that matter".

Varadkar is likely to succeed Enda Kenny, who has stepped down in May, following him involvement in a corruption scandal.

Because of the size in the ruling coalition, the election of 38-year-old Varadkar will make him Prime Minister.

"I want to thank everyone who engaged in this extraordinary, open democratic process", Varadkar said in his acceptance speech.

'It's not something that defines me.

Varadkar's pick represents a break with tradition also because he is the son of an Indian doctor father - an unusual heritage for an Irish politician.

If confirmed as prime minister, Varadkar will lead a country still emerging from the shadow of the 2008 global financial crisis, which hit the debt-fueled "Celtic Tiger" economy particularly hard.
