A Survation telephone poll for the Record, which backed Labour in the election, put the SNP at its lowest level since September 214, down to 39%, while Scottish Labour scored a remarkable 29%, its highest in more than two years, and the Tories were on 26%.

Mr Salmond reflected on the losses of the senior SNP figures.

The SNP have lost very fine parliamentarians this evening and that is a grievous blow to the SNP.

'But overall results show the SNP will win a majority of the seats in this country and a majority of the votes'.

He said that while the SNP may have been reduced in numbers at Westminster, they will still have significant influence.

And he added: 'You've not seen the last of my bonnet and me, ' quoting a Jacobite song.

He said: "I was hopeful but I've stood here before and have been beaten a few times by Angus before".

As Scottish voters went to polling stations amid torrential rain or overcast skies on Thursday, two fresh eve-of-election polls supported forecasts that the SNP would lose as many as 12 Westminster seats.

Britain's Conservative Party has claimed the scalp of Angus Robertson, the leader of the Scottish National Party in the Westminster parliament, in one of five losses for Scotland's pro-independence party. Paul Masterton took the constituency - which 20 years ago had been the safest Tory seat in Scotland - from the SNP's Kirsten Oswald.

She said: 'This has been a disaster for Theresa May. She called this election to secure a mandate for her negotiating position, and the electorate snubbed her. We have to wait and see how things shake out.

In a sign of how well the Tories were doing in the SNP's rural seats, there was a recount order in the other key Tory target of Perth and North Perthshire, held by the SNP's Scottish affairs committee chairman, Pete Wishart.

'I'm disappointed at the SNP losses but I'm pleased that we've won the election'.

As he arrived at the count in Aberdeen, former SNP leader Alex Salmond told reporters: " Sometimes you get swings in politics that even the excellence of individual MPs can't withstand".

In East Dunbartonshire, Liberal Democrat Jo Swinson regained the seat from the SNP's J ohn Nicolson - who won the constituency from her in the 2015 election.

Scottish Conservatives leader Ruth Davidson celebrated a "historic night" for her party north of the border, and stated in one interview the result for the SNP left any prospect of a second independence referendum "dead".

Labour also returned to winning ways in Scotland's largest city, winning Glasgow North East from the nationalists, ousting Anne McLaughlin, and defeated the SNP in Midlothian and East Lothian.
