Special Counsel Robert Mueller Will Investigate President Trump

The special counsel appointed to investigate Russian influence in the 2016 United States presidential campaign is now examining whether Donald Trump tried to obstruct justice, according to a report.

The three officials the Post says Mueller is interviewing are Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers and Richard Ledgett, the recently retired deputy NSA director.

Kasowitz issued a statement saying the Federal Bureau of Investigation was behind the Post story and called the leak "outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".

The president previously said that fired FBI Director James Comey assured him in private conversation that he was not under investigation.

Mr Comey told Congress last week he believed he was sacked by Mr Trump to undermine the agency's Russian Federation probe.

President Trump is reportedly being investigated for possible obstruction of justice.

"While the president has the right to, he has no intention to do so", Sarah Sanders, a White House spokesman said.

"I took it as a very disturbing thing, very concerning, but that's a conclusion I'm sure the special counsel will work towards, to try and understand what the intention was there, and whether that's an offense", Comey testified last week.

One person who attended the meeting said it was a quick, off-hand comment, but Romney supporters broke into applause. But people who were there confirmed the conversation, and described it as a warm, bipartisan talk.

"The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", Corallo told CNN. The office of Director of National Intelligence and Ledgett declined to comment.

And leading Republicans waved off the idea of firing Mr Mueller, with House Speaker Paul Ryan saying that his advice was to "let Robert Mueller do his job" and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell voicing confidence in the special counsel.

Chatter surfaced earlier this week that the president was considering firing Mueller. The New York Times reported that Trump had been waved off the idea by advisers. The investigation has been cloaked in secrecy and it's unclear how many others have been questioned by the FBI.

Deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mr Mueller last month, testified on Tuesday that he had seen no evidence of good cause to sack him.

Mueller's investigative team has expanded in recent weeks.

The special counsel appointed to investigate Russian influence in the 2016 presidential campaign has met with the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee in an effort to ensure their investigations don't conflict. At the end of May, the chief of the Justice Department's Fraud Section, Andrew Weissman, also joined the team, NPR's Carrie Johnson reported at the time.

Justice Department policy is that a sitting president can not be indicted by a grand jury, the Post also reported Wednesday.
