'The Last Knight' needs to be the last Transformers film

The film hits theaters on June 21st, 2017.

I know he catches a lot of flak from the fans, but Michael Bay is great at putting together a visually appealing movie, and you can't take that away from him. The rest of this five entry franchise is an exhaustive, incoherent mess in the eyes of fans of the old series of cartoons and toys and fans of craft of film.

If you understood any of that, congratulations, you are on the same wavelength as Michael Bay and his screenwriters.

It's been clear for a long time that Bay doesn't care what critics think.

The final scene in the film teases at a sequel. Internally, Paramount is comping Last Knight to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales which earned $5.5M on its preview night, then $23.6M on its first day before a $63M weekend (however that was the three day over Memorial Day).

There's a good chance that The Last Knight will plant seeds for the 1980s-set Bumblebee prequel, since its plot hinges on the Autobot joining forces with Cade against a renegade Optimus Prime. Meanwhile, Sir Edmund Burton (Anthony Hopkins) learns that Optimus is on his way back to Earth and sends his servant Cogman to locate Cade.

Never say never again!

Last summer saw installments of both the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and "Star Trek" franchises disappoint, and it now looks as though Paramount has put both properties on the back burner.

Cacophonous, thinly plotted, and boasting state-of-the-art special effects, The Last Knight is pretty much what you'd expect from the fifth installment of the Transformers franchise. The exact same thing happens in nearly all of the previous "Transformers" movies.

Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) is again being pursued by the authorities, but there are also some talented newcomers to this Transformers film: Laura Haddock portrays a lovely brainiac who's key to Earth's survival; Jerrod Carmichael stars as Jimmy, a young man who's hired by Yeager to work in a salvage yard; and 15-year-old Isabela Moner portrays Izabella "with a z", who lands unexpectedly in Yeager's life.

As a director, he can most certainly compose action sequences, and every moviegoer knows this if they know him by name, however his composition of the film as a whole is still as poor as every other he's produced. Unlike his elder statesman characters in "Westworld" and "Thor", Hopkins doesn't appear to just be doing this for a paycheck.

THE LAST KNIGHT, from Paramount Pictures. The slight pauses in action where the characters spend time with each other prove the movie had potential, but it was thoroughly wasted.
