Federer thrashes Zverev to win ninth Halle title

Top seed Roger Federer will square off No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev Sunday in the final of Gerry Weber Open in Halle.

Federer, who won the Australian Open in January for his 18th Grand Slam title, made a decision to skip the clay-court season, including the French Open, to prepare for the grass and hard-court seasons, with his eye on Wimbledon, where he is a seven-time champion.

Zverev, who had lost his first eight matches against top-10 players then beaten seven of the next 11 - including Federer in the semi-finals here previous year - encountered the Swiss on one of his magical days.

But, instead of serving out the set, the top seed was broken again and Khachanov even held two set points at 6-5 before the world No. 5 recovered and forced a tie-break.

Federer showing his class, did not waste much time in clinching the second set and easily cruised to the winning mark, thrashing Zverev 6-3 in the second set. The Swiss maestro spoke about Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal. "I think what Nadal did at the French Open stands out".

"I felt good and never let up", said Federer, who dropped just nine points on his serve. But in a stunning performance against Barty, Kvitova battled back from losing the first set and stepped up in the second half of the decider to seal victory.

"I'm pleased with how I am playing".

Federer will now surely start Wimbledon as favourite in search of his eighth title, having been cut to 2/1 by Sky Bet. I'm very happy for him, how he's developed in the last years.

Federer also spoke about his straight sets victory over Mischa Zverev, who is at a career-high ranking of 29. "I have spent a lot of time on practice, training and rehab so it is nice to be back on court".

"It has been a hard year with a lot of practice, training and rehab so I am very happy to be back on the court", he said.
