Video shows scared passengers being escorted out of a trapped subway carriage following the derailment as hundreds had to be evacuated.

One rider noted that the A train broke down and "caught fire" at 125th Street.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) confirmed that a train derailed and seven people suffered from non-life-threatening injuries.

One of them tweeted that she was "still shaken up" by the incident.

"The train was peeled open like a can opener", Paul Navarro, track division chairman for the Transport Workers Union, said. "People were falling", said passenger Susan Pak, of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. He said investigators will determine how the brake was triggered.

Joe Lhota (LOH'-tuh) says there were no initial indications of equipment or track failure before two cars derailed and scraped a wall on Tuesday morning. Lhota said the smoke was caused by sparks and the garbage and sanitation along the tracks.

The power outage that reportedly caused the derailment at 125th Street sent shockwaves through the rest of MTA: service between 59th Street and 125th on the B and C trains was suspended both ways, according to NBC News. It said there was smoke, but no fire. Emergency crews shut off track power after derailments to prevent evacuees from being electrocuted. "People were falling", said passenger Susan Pak, of Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

A total of 34 people were injured.

The MTA last month announced a new initiative complementary to its five-year, $29.5 billion funding plan that directs $14 billion toward improving the subway system.

Commuter railroads have also had problems recently. Almost three dozen people were injured, the New York Daily News reported.
