Kremlin says no progress in preparing Putin-Trump meeting yet

  • US, Russia agree to 'continue contacts' in Lavrov-Tillerson phone call

A top aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the lack of progress in mending ties between Russia and the United States is damaging not only for the two countries themselves but also for the wider worldwide community.

The officials say the amount of substantial contact Moscow has with the US administration is minimal. Those compounds, located in Maryland and outside New York City, were seized by the USA as part of a larger sanctions package authorized by then-President Barack Obama to punish Russian Federation for the election meddling.

"I think if you go back and you look at it, the American people, in my judgment, deserved to know what was happening", Burns said during an exchange with Sen.

"As the president has made clear, he'd like the United States and the entire West to develop a more constructive relationship with Russian Federation but he has also made clear that we will do what is necessary to confront Russia's destabilizing behavior", McMaster said.

A senior White House official told CNN this week that Moscow has been pushing for a formal bilateral meeting with Trump as a sign of respect between the leaders.

"No preparations for the meeting are underway, no progress yet", he said.

A proposed new package of sanctions on Russian Federation in the U.S. Congress might complicate Trump's desire for warmer relations with Moscow. Trump was likely responding to a Washington Post report detailing Obama's response to information about Russian interference in the election.

But Lavrov added that it would "probably not be right" if Putin and Trump did not talk at the G20 summit of world economic powers.

"We repeat that President Putin and President Trump will be participating in G20 summit".

He said it was traditional at such events that leaders crossed paths. However, he added, one should remember that it is not only the relationship between Moscow and Washington at stake.

"We believe that the meeting will take place since the two presidents will be in the same city, in the same building, at the same time".

Anti-Russian sentiments which persist in Washington are harmful to the USA itself and prevent the untangling of important global issues, according to Lavrov.
