John McEnroe Will Not Apologize for His Comment on Serena Williams

  • John Mc Enroe had said that while he has great respect for Serena he would place the 23-time Grand Slam winner

Retired tennis player John McEnroe doubled down on his comments regarding Serena Williams Tuesday night. He said if she tried to be part of the men's tour, "she'd be like 700 in the world".

McEnroe, speaking with NPR over the weekend, was asked why he chose to describe Williams as the "best female player" instead of simply "the best tennis player".

Tennis great John McEnroe was promoting his new book, called "But Seriously", when he got himself into hot water recently.

The comments did not attract the same level of attention at the time as McEnroe's recent outburst, which he re-iterated on CBS's This Morning programme yesterday after refusing to apologise for the comments. "This is not something that has been earth shattering, that I feel there's a difference in the level of the women and the men".

"Serena admitted that when she learned she was expecting her "heart dropped" as she was thinking, "'Oh my God, this can't be.I had planned on winning Wimbledon this year'". Then we don't have to guess.

A third "battle of the sexes" match took place in 1992 between American former world number one Jimmy Connors, aged 40 at the time, and Czech/American Martina Navratilova, who was 35.

"People always ask me, 'Can you beat Serena Williams?'" he said. "I've done absolutely nothing for the baby room".

Federer will now surely start Wimbledon as favourite in search of his eighth title, having been cut to 2/1 by Sky Bet. I'm very happy for him, how he's developed in the last years.

"I don't know what to do with a baby".

Would Serena at her peak beat Tursunov or not?

It's unfortunate Serena Williams wants to stifle opinion about her capabilities as an athlete.

"I've got a solution", McEnroe said.

Serena also said in her interview that she's waiting to find out the baby's gender, but she invites all her fans to a guessing game. I think she's doing it tongue in cheek as well and I think deep down we're talking about something. How am I going to play the Australian Open? It's not earth shattering that there's a difference between the men and the women.

The victor of 23 grand slam single titles posted the photo on her Twitter, along with a message for her fans: "Check out my Vanity Fair Cover".
