Both Pope Francis and President Trump have spoken out in defense of the parents of gravely ill Charlie Gard to seek out new treatment.

Charlie's parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard from Bedfont, west London, have spent the last days of their son's life with him, after being given more time before his life-support is turned off.

"Love for children often leads parents to go beyond what is normally possible when it comes to their child's well-being; just as in the case of Chris Gard and Connie Yates who managed to raise £1.4 million to finance in our understanding ethically viable innovative medical procedures that could bring them and others hope", they continued.

In a statement, the Vatican's Bambino Gesù Hospital says it would like Gard transferred to their facility.

A White House statement said: "Upon learning of baby Charlie Gard's situation, President Trump has offered to help the family in this heartbreaking situation".

On Saturday, Pope Francis made a statement saying that the Gards should be allowed to pursue any treatment option that may have a chance at saving their son.

PA LOVED Charlie is spending his final days at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London

An 11th hour offer from US President Donald Trump has not been taken up as doctors say they are bound by court's decision and want the baby to die with dignity.

Ms Enoc said: "I was contacted by the mother, who is a very determined and decisive person and doesn't want to be stopped by anything". Over the phone, Alfano raised the case and reiterated the Vatican kids' hospital's offer, the foreign ministry said.

Charlie's parents had asked the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London to release the baby as they wanted to take him to the USA for an experimental treatment for the genetic disorder. "We also encourage the Catholic community to pray for Charlie, his parents and all those that have been caring for him". His parents subsequently found out that 18 people have been treated in the USA with an experimental medication that could remedy the condition. And that battle officially ended this past week when the highest court in Europe, the European Court of Human Rights, decided in favor of the hospital.

THERESA May and Boris Johnson have backed Great Ormond Street Hospital over their treatment of terminally ill Charlie Gard - as the PM stressed they will not ignore any offers of help.

After they lost that appeal, the 10-month-old was due to have his life support switched off at the end of the day June 13. "That's one more sad note", Enoc said.

The pope's top bioethics official initially suggested that while the parents' wishes should be respected, they must also be helped to accept the limits of medicine. The rare genetic condition and brain damage has left Charlie deaf and blind, subject to seizures and unable to move his limbs or breathe on his own.
