US President Donald Trump said he expects a "powerful" trade deal with the United Kingdom "very, very quickly", confirming that the two countries are now working on an agreement.

Trump said Saturday that he and Prime Minister Theresa May have had "tremendous talks" and developed a "special relationship".

Theresa May has hailed the "powerful vote of confidence" in Britain Donald Trump and other world leaders have shown with their "strong desire" to strike new trade deals after Brexit.

"We've already started talking with the Americans, trade secretary Liam Fox was over in the United States just a week or two ago talking to their trade minister about the opportunities, and the work has already continued, so we're optimistic, and positive about this".

The closest they came to discord was over Iran's nuclear deal, which Trump has criticized and where May reiterated the U.K.'s support.

President Donald Trump is meeting Britain's head of government on the sidelines of an global summit in Germany.

Trump also confirmed he will visit the British capital, though he did not say when, putting an end to speculation that the trip may have been quietly scuppered due to a backlash in Britain.

Today, Theresa May will meet with US President Donald Trump for a bilateral meeting covering trade, climate change and terrorism, among other topics.

May was the first foreign leader to visit Trump at the White House after the inauguration.

Christopher Meyer, a former British ambassador to Washington, said Trump's statement of intent was a "very good sign for the future" and would be "useful" to May. Theresa May and the U.S. President have plans to establish the trade deal as soon as possible.

The Hill also reported that the statement mentions "that 19 of the 20 countries - with the USA the only exclusion - are committed to the Paris agreement on climate change".
