  • Bobby Schindler joined Ian Payne in the studio before returning to Great Ormond Street Hospital to support Charlie Gard's parents

But they lost a lengthy legal battle after successive judges ruled in favour of doctors at GOSH, who argued the treatment would not improve the infant's quality of life and say his life-support machine should be switched off.

The intervention comes as more than 350,000 people signed a petition urging the baby's doctors to allow him to receive treatment overseas, and his family said the "fight is not over".

Charlie Gard has been handed a new lifeline by U.S. lawmakers who want to grant the terminally ill baby and his parents the right to move to America.

The parents of Charlie Gard have said that they're "still fighting", because Charlie is still fighting.

Great Ormond Street Hospital's statement was the latest twist in a case that has raised hard bioethical and legal questions, and has caught the attention of Pope Francis and United States President Donald Trump.

Charlie Gard's parents vowed to keep fighting for their terminally ill baby's treatment as they joined supporters to deliver a 350,000 signature petition to doctors.

The 11-month old boy's case is due to return to the High Court on Monday after the hospital said it had seen claims of new evidence relating to the potential therapy.

Chris Gard told reporters Sunday that the US hospital where they want their son to be treated has doctors who specialize in Charlie's condition.

"Two worldwide hospitals and their researchers have communicated to us as late as the last 24 hours that they have fresh evidence about their proposed experimental treatment", the hospital said in the statement.

Speaking outside Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) on Sunday, his parents said: "He's our son, he's our flesh and blood". One of those doctors is a researcher and neurologist from Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome, which has previously offered to treat Charlie.

They said tests in mice and patients, with a similar but not the same genetic condition as Charlie, had shown dramatic clinical improvements. We've been fighting for this medication since November.

Charlie's family were joined by an American pastor who travelled to the United Kingdom to pray at his bedside and tweets from the campaign account suggested he had initially not been allowed on the neonatal intensive care unit, which cares for seriously ill infants.

GOSH said it was acting in Charlie's best interests and it would now be for the High Court to make its judgement on the facts. A USA hospital has offered to ship the drug needed for the therapy to Britain for Charlie.

Great Ormond Street Hospital said it is "bound by the ruling of the High Court which expressly forbids us from transferring Charlie for nucleoside therapy anywhere".

Justice Secretary David Lidington said the Government had "no role to play" in the case.

The boy's parents are convinced that an experimental therapy, developed by a United States neurologist, may help their son recover some functions - even though it has never been tested on someone with Charlie's particularly severe form of the disease, known as mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome.
