It's not clear they'll stay free forever, but Best Buy's Geek Squad also offers free smart home consultations for now. "We are excited about the range of initiatives we have previously announced that do just that and feel uniquely positioned to serve consumers by offering products, services and support wherever the customer wants it, including in one of our 1,000 stores, on BestBuy.com and in homes millions of times a year".

But maybe not for long. Recode reports that the $483 billion company is assembling its own Geek Squad to rival Best Buy's famed tech assistance team, amassing an army of gadget experts and handymen to help install smart-home products inside customers' homes in seven west coast markets, including Seattle, Washington, Portland, Oregon, and a number of California cities. The service even includes "Alexa Smart Home Consultations", where consumers can ask questions and be recommended products. Essentially an Angie's List competitor, Amazon Home Services is available across the USA today.

The Amazon consultants are tasked with "setting up and troubleshooting technology products in customers' homes as well as providing expert product advice".

Amazon is also rolling out free smart-home consultations as well, where technicians will demonstrate the various capabilities of smart home devices. The installation fees run are about $99. The service is live now in seven markets across the USA - including Amazon's hometown of Seattle, among other West Coast metros.
