  • Man 'who kicked girlfriend in the face 10 times' arrested after Amazon Alexa called police

An Amazon Echo smart speaker at a home in New Mexico automatically dialed police in the middle of an alleged domestic incident, according to ABC News. Barros allegedly held up a firearm and threatened to kill his girlfriend, asking her, "Did you call the sheriffs?" He then asked her: "Did you call the sheriffs?"

As an increasing number of smart speakers make their way into homes, more concerns are being raised about the devices' "always listening" capabilities.

Police spokesperson claimed that it was a lucky break for the department and that the Google Home had probably saved the life of the woman. He was taken into custody following a six-hour standoff with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office Crisis Negotiation Team and a SWAT team, per the police statement. Who knew that smart speakers, capable of searching for information and placing online orders, could also help against crime? "This unbelievable technology definitely helped save a mother and her child from a very violent situation", Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III told ABC News.

Eduardo Barros, a citizen of New Mexico, were present in his house in a town New Mexico, with his daughter and girlfriend yesterday night.

Camille Baca, a spokeswoman for the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court, says Barros is facing 14 charges, including false imprisonment, aggravated battery against a household member and possession of a firearm by a felon.

This isn't the first time police have turned to data provided by IoT devices. Police in OH used data from a pacemaker to charge a man with arson and insurance fraud.

It's an interesting story that echoes the recent news stories of evidence concerning a murder in Arkansas being recorded by Amazon's Echo Dot and requested by authorities.

Many people already enjoy the hands-free convenience of giving voice commands to smart assistants.

The device apparently took the question literally and called authorities.

Police officers responded to a call placed to dispatchers where they could hear the shouting and arguments that were taking place inside the house from which the call was placed.
