US Declares Iran complying on Nuclear Deal

The sanctions freeze any assets in the US and prevent Americans from doing business with them.

The sanctions, he said, "send a strong signal that the United States can not and will not tolerate Iran's provocative and destabilizing behavior".

The US administration is expected to ratchet up pressure on Iran with a slew of new sanctions targeting the Islamic Republic's illicit ballistic missile program and regional support for terrorism, according to senior USA officials who deemed Iran in violation of the agreement's "spirit".

Zarif accused the Trump administration of failing to lift sanctions in line with the deal.

As a presidential candidate, Trump was voracious in his denunciation of the deal.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee hailed the new sanctions.

"If it comes to a major violation, or what in the terms of the nuclear deal is called significant nonperformance, then Iran has other options available, including withdrawing from the deal", he added.

The Senate bill, S. 722, which was later merged with a Russian Federation sanctions bill, has so far stalled in the House over concerns from the energy industry that a provision could block USA companies from lucrative foreign oil deals. In addition, the U.S. Treasury Department targeted seven entities and five individuals for supporting Iranian military purchases, along with what it described as an "Iran-based transnational criminal organization" and three people linked to the group.

The senior administration official said the Trump administration meant to employ a strategy that would "address the totality of Iran's malign behavior" and not just focus on the Iran nuclear agreement.

"There have been a number of years of concessions to the Iranian regime, and the administration does not intend to overlook those any further".

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is responsible for monitoring and verifying Iran's compliance with the deal.

The senior official told reporters the White House believes Iran remains one of the most unsafe governments, and cited as evidence Tehran's support for terrorism, continuing hostility to Israel, cyber attacks against the United States and numerous human rights abuses.

As planned, a public rollout began Monday morning involving close choreography among the White House, the State Department and other parts of government.

The New York Times also reported that Trump's top security advisers - including Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster - assembled at an hourlong meeting last Wednesday to convince the president to re-certify.

In a growing battle between Trump and his cabinet, Trump was planning to tell Congress he wouldn't recertify compliance, while conceding that there was no example of Iran not complying with the deal.

Ultimately, the president's decision was the same on the substance to what his administration had been planning all along.

In April, when Trump made his first certification, he paired it with new sanctions for non-nuclear behavior to show there was no softening of his stance toward the Islamic Republic.

The statement also said the sanctions would target "networks and businessmen" who carried out "the theft of United States and western software programmes" which they say were sold to the Government of Iran. Administration officials on Monday said the Treasury Department was still reviewing a proposed sale of civilian airliners from Boeing to Iran's largest airline.

Mohammed Javad Zarif, the Foreign Minister of Iran, defended the Regime's compliance with the deal, on Monday. "So we don't know which one to interpret in what way". I think we can look forward to a series of provocations created to provoke some kind of response from Iran that Trump can use as a pretext for killing the deal.

Per the agreement pushed by President Obama, as a legacy defining issue according to critics, Iran agreed to freeze its nuclear weapons programme for 15 years in exchange for lifting of US-led economic sanctions - in addition to those mandated by the United Nations - that had crippled its economy.

"It's very clear that Iran is serious about the nuclear deal and we believe the nuclear deal can lay the foundation".

The statement also criticised Iran's support for the Syrian government and groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.
