  • The pay of top BBC stars has been revealed

"Ofcom say they will set the BBC targets for on screen diversity but will not set targets for diversity behind the camera".

BBC presenters' six-figure salaries have been published, exposing a stark gender pay gap, with the top-earning woman on £1.5 million less than the highest-paid man.

The television reporter was out-earned only by sports reporter Gary Lineker who earns £1,750,000 - £1,799,999, and Chris Evans, who topped the list with £2,200,000 - £2,249,999. However, the corporation are already bracing themselves for a backlash concerning the discrepancies between the highest paid male and female stars.

It's important to note that numerous BBC's high-profile stars aren't included in this list.

Lawyers have warned that the BBC could be open to discrimination lawsuits brought by its female employees.

"On gender and diversity, the BBC is more diverse than the broadcasting industry and the civil service", BBC director-general Tony Hall said in a statement.

Sure BBC presenters get paid a lot but it's not that much compared to people working in their industry!

And one journalist summed up the fact that the BBC couldn't please everyone - or pay talent in a way that every person would approve of - in one witty Tweet.

Commenting on the list, UKIP media spokesman Patrick O'Flynn said salaries at the top end "seem ridiculous, particularly when you bear in mind the extra spin-off earnings that come with being a major BBC presenter".

Among the other well-known names on the list are ex-tennis professional John McEnroe (more than 150,000) and Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi (over 200,000).

When asked if it was right he was paid more than the Prime Minister Evans laughed and said: "I am paid more than the Prime Minister aren't I, is it fair?"

Former Top Gear presenter and Radio Two DJ Chris Evans came out the highest paid member of staff, earning between £2.2 million ($2.86 million) and £2.25 million ($2.9 million) per year.

After arguing that it should only have to reveal salaries only of "stars" earning more than £450,000, the BBC battled to delay publication of the list so as to buy time to even up the "gender pay gap" and move staff off its books.

Just after the BBC's data was released, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) dropped the latest instalment of a series of interactive data visualisations, this time focusing on the gender pay gap in Britain.

Speaking to BBCs Radio 4 Today show, he said that the broadcaster needed to go "further and faster" to tackle these issues. "They help make the BBC what it is", he told the Guardian. It's good to see some women on the list too. They, and many others, aren't paid directly by the BBC, but by independent production companies. "It's going to change the market for talent in this country". I totally understand it.

Questioned by Mishal Husain on Radio 4's Today programme, director general Lord Hall said that, compared with an 18% gap in pay between genders across the United Kingdom, the BBC pay gap across the corporation was 10%, which will be audited in the autumn.
