Google Announces Redesigned 'Feed' as a Replacement for Google Now

  • Google has taken steps to prevent another massive phishing attack

After announcing the feed in its Google app in December past year, Google is now updating the feed, allowing users to follow certain topics, including world events, top news, sports highlights and more, via advanced machine learning.

The newly updated feed brings Google one step closer to competing with Facebook's news feed, which is tailored to users based on "your connections and activity" on the social media site, meaning it bases its feed both on the stories your friends share and which of those you click on, according to its online help center.

The new feed is rolling out today in the United States on Android and iOS. For some search results - like music artists, movies and sports teams - you'll be able to tap a Follow button to add that topic to your feed.

While Google's feed is based on your web history, it will also pull in information you might not usually see. It identifies areas of interest selected by a user, and their history of using Search, YouTube and other Google products, to produce a stream of news stories and other information meant to be unique to each user. By tapping the button, the user is able to follow all updates and stories about their favourited topic.

Google wants its mobile app to be more than just a vehicle for retrieving answers to questions. However, these are set up to send alerts via email, instead of this, which places news related to the search query directly into the Google Search App's feed. Feed has been incorporated into the Google app for Android and iOS and shows up automatically when you swipe up from the homepage.

We'll leave you with some final words from Dr. Seuss: "The more that you read, the more things you will know".

Rolling out as of today, the update will add a personalised stream of articles, videos and other content in the form of "cards" in the main space below the Google search bar.

The updates to a format Google first unveiled last December come a day after Amazon unveiled Spark, its own feed of product photos and stories created to help subscribers to its Prime service find products to buy more easily.

Google's Vice President of Engineering Shashi Khakur said the feature is all about keeping the user aware, even when they are not searching for anything.

Google has long had ambitions of becoming more like Facebook and Twitter, which have users that spend lots of time on their apps. The feed also features links to the products on Amazon's website, making it easier for customers to buy referenced goods that interest them. Furthermore, users can now tap topic headers to delve deeper into them and search everything related to their topic of choice.
