  • Sikkim standoff: Pak game plan in focus as envoy meets Chinese ambassador to India

INDIA on Thursday accused China of unilaterally trying to change the status quo on the border with Bhutan and said this is what has sparked off the stand-off between the Indian and Chinese armies.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop discussed the Doklam border standoff in separate talks with Modi, Indian Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, and Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj during a visit to Delhi this week. At the same time, it has expanded its military presence across the South China Sea and Indian Ocean with substantial investments in a number of countries from Myanmar to Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Djibouti.

"First, India's invasion of Chinese territory is a plain fact".

Ma holds a specialization in India-China studies and he said that if the Doklam issue is not resolved through dialogue, it could damage bilateral ties between the two countries. "If New Delhi does not withdraw its troops, the last option for China is fighting against India and ending the conflict without diplomatic means".

India and China have been involved in a dispute in the Doklam region along the Sikkim border for over a month now.

On 20 July, Swaraj had spoken in Parliament about why India had to "intervene at the tri-junction point to stop China's unilateral attempt to change the status quo because this would impact our security".

Washington has remained nearly totally mum about the standoff between India and China. The Chinese embassy in India has also been actively engaging with the Indian public to explain its country's position. Second, India's military strength is far behind that of China.

"Our diplomatic channel is unimpeded and the withdrawal of the Indian border troops is the precondition for any meaningful dialogue and the communication between the two sides", Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said at a press conference. Conversely, Sushma said that the boundaries between India and China are yet to be finalised and the two nations will do that bilaterally through a mechanism already set up, while the same between China and Bhutan too will be done through talks.

The Pentagon has encouraged India and China to engage in a direct dialogue free of any "coercive aspects". "China cherishes peace. But peace can not be achieved at the expense of China's lost territory, and 1.4 billion Chinese people will not accept that peace", it said. "She was lying to the parliament", the editorial said. But a break in the crisis has to satisfy not only India and China but also Bhutan, making this a doubly hard endeavour.

It asserted that India should not count on support of USA and Japan "because their support is illusory". Some observers feel that the Doklam episode would find a happy resolution by then, for surely it would be terribly odd if the Indian PM were to attend summit meetings with the Chinese president (and other leaders) in China while their soldiers were locked in a tense standoff at the border.
