  • Israeli police in the old city of Jerusalem

Abbas called for the removal of metal detectors from the al-Aqsa Mosque compound and Jerusalem's other holy sites late Friday, stating that people should be able to "pray with dignity".

Abu El Gheit, Egypt's previous foreign minister, who visited the Temple Mount during his tenure, added that "the Israeli authorities put the region in a very risky situation", saying that Israeli policies "are not directed at the Palestinians alone" and that they "hurt the feelings of every Arab and Muslim in the world".

Saturday's raid took place amid increased tensions in the West Bank over Israel's tightening grip on the al-Aqsa Mosque and the security measures around it.

This, and an attack on settlers believed to have been spill-over violence, hs left six people dead, three Palestinians and three Israelis.

Three Israelis were stabbed to death in an illegal Jewish settlement in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, hours after three Palestinians were killed, news outlets reported.

The metal detectors were introduced after a brazen attack on the morning of July 14, when three armed Arab citizens of Israel emerged from Al Aqsa mosque and fatally shot two Israeli Druze police officers who were guarding an entrance to the compound.

In response to the security measures, Palestinians rallied after the Muslim Friday prayers, protesting the new measures, including the barring of Muslim men under the age of 50.

"Noting the particular sensitivities surrounding the holy sites in Jerusalem, and the need to ensure security, the Quartet envoys call on all to demonstrate maximum restraint, refrain from provocative actions and work towards de-escalating the situation", the statement said.

"How sweet death is for the sake of God, his prophet and for al-Aqsa Mosque", he wrote, referring to the increased Israeli restrictions on Palestinians visiting Islam's third holiest mosque in Jerusalem.

He called on the worldwide community, primarily the United States, to intervene to compel the Israeli government to maintain the status quo at the holy compound. Movement of Palestinians from his village was also restricted by Israeli security services.

It began when Israel placed metal detectors at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque compound.

The demonstration on Saturday was organized by the Palestinian Forum in Britain, who said they sought to attract attention to Israel's aggression in Jerusalem.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas says Israel will ultimately suffer for the freeze in security coordination with the PA.
