  • Charlie Gard's mom breaks down, storms out of court as fresh medical report emerged

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Charlie Gard's parents have ended their five-month legal battle to take the terminally ill baby to the United States for experimental treatment.

"All we wanted to do was take Charlie from one world-renowned hospital to another", Mr Yates said.

A representative for the Gard family, Grant Armstrong, told the court that it's too late to save Charlie as the window of opportunity is gone.

The parents believe Charlie could have gone on to live a full and healthy life if he had been allowed to receive experiment all treatment in November a year ago. "Due to the delay that chance has been lost".

Last week the American specialist, Dr Michio Hirano, a professor of neurology at Columbia University Medical Centre in NY, travelled to London to examine Charlie for the first time and discuss the case with Great Ormond Street doctors. The judge expressed his sympathy and said that the parents did everything they could for the 11-month-old infant.

Charlie has a rare genetic condition causing progressive muscle weakness and brain damage. "It is hoped that those who, like the professor, have provided the opinions that have so sustained Charlie's parents, their hopes and thus this protracted litigation with its many consequences, will also find much upon which to reflect".

Supporters of Charlie Gard hold placards outside the court in London.

The case gained attention around the world after Charlie's parents received support from high-profile names such as Pope Francis and U.S. president Donald Trump.

Brexit talks start as war breaks out among United Kingdom ministers
Mr Davis said they made a "good start" at last month's preliminary talks - but it was now time to "get to the nitty-gritty".

Activists supporting Charlie Gards' parents congregated on Sunday afternoon for a vigil outside the High Court in central London where legal proceedings are resuming on Monday.

Outside the hospital where Charlie is being treated, his father gave an emotional statement, saying the family might never know what would have happened had Charlie been allowed to receive the experimental therapy earlier in his short life.

Gard's parents had raised nearly $1.7 million to support the costs of the treatment, and now say they plan to establish a foundation so their child's voice "continues to be heard".

The latest legal battle saw new testimony from a U.S. neurologist, but a lawyer also warned the boy's parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard that latest scans made "sad reading".

The judge has scheduled a two-day hearing to consider fresh evidence, after the doctor who was to conduct the treatment came to London to evaluate the child.

The protracted legal battle between GOSH and Chris Gard and Connie Yates centres around the hospital's treatment of the baby.

Mary MacLeod, chairman of Great Ormond Street Hospital, said in a statement, "We fully understand that there is intense public interest, and that emotions run high".

Charlie's parents allegedly decided to forego treatment for their son Friday but chose not to publicize the decision until Monday.
