  • Judge orders Apple to pay University of Wisconsin $507M for infringing on chip efficiency patent

Now the judge has somewhat thrown the book at Apple, basically doubling the judgement. A Madison-based judge said that Apple owes the University additional damages because the Cupertino-based tech company continued to infringe on the patent until it expired in December 2016. Would not want to give any of those billions of dollars in cash to a university. Apple has lost that case with US District Judge William Conley ordering Apple to pay $506 million to the University of Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. Apple's A7, A8, and A8X system-on-chip designs infringe on the patent, according to the ruling. That's a little over double what a jury awarded WARF last fall. Apple requested that the U.S. Patent office review the validity of the patent but that request was turned down.

In October 2015, WARF was awarded a judgment in its favour and damages, with Judge William Conley ordering Apple to pay almost $235 million for infringing the patent. This patent was originally granted in 1998 by a Computer Science Professor named Gurindar Sohi and spans an important method of improving the overall processor efficiency.

Google Announces Redesigned 'Feed' as a Replacement for Google Now
Google has long had ambitions of becoming more like Facebook and Twitter , which have users that spend lots of time on their apps. Furthermore, users can now tap topic headers to delve deeper into them and search everything related to their topic of choice.

In the meantime, Apple wanted the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to review the validity of the patent, but the request was shot down, and now a judge has nearly doubled the original damage decision citing the extra damages accrued by the end of 2016, when the patent expired.

Apple denied infringement during the trial. He added $272m to the $234m jury verdict that WARF won in October 2015 against the iPhone maker. However, the latest ruling comes after the court found Apple to continue infringing on the patents as long as it remained void.
