Authorities said that while it was safe for most people to return to places they had evacuated after spending the night in makeshift shelters, the fire risk remained at its highest level in other parts of the department.

As thick black smoke billowed above the crests of hills, Col. Eric Martin of the Var firefighting unit told BFM-TV that French crews were trying to contain the flames that had run through 1,300 hectares (3,210 acres) around Bormes.

The fires have hit areas in southern France, including the Var, Vaucluse, Alpes-Maritimes and Bouches-du-Rhone departments and the town of Carros to the north of Nice.

In the nearby village of Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, 740 acres of pine and oak trees burned.

A voracious wildfire that has carbonised vast swathes of land in southeast France and forced the evacuation of 12,000 people has been partially brought under control but firefighters were on alert for fresh outbreaks of flames amid tinderbox conditions, officials said on Thursday.

The fires across southern France come as summer holiday season starts across the country, with many people traveling to the Riviera, the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, for vacations.

Firefighters in France appear to be winning the battle against the flames that swept up along the Mediterranean Coast.

Still, the Var prefecture said fires in some sites in Bormes-les-Mimosas mean it is "not yet possible" for displaced residents and tourists to return to their homes and campsites.

Ash floated in the air and vast plumes of smoke covered areas of central Portugal, in the area around Serta, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) northeast of Lisbon.

Around 370 acres of land was destroyed as the fire spread. The Civil Protection Agency said 24 water-dropping aircraft were in action.

Numerous evacuated tourists and residents had been staying in gymnasiums, a sailing club and other makeshift shelters in Bormes-Les-Mimosas, La Londe-Les-Maures and La Lavandou.

Wildfires also still burned in Portugal, where a fast-moving blaze killed 64 people last month.

More than 70 percent of Portugal is enduring a severe drought.

Civil Protection Agency spokeswoman Patricia Gaspar says continuing strong winds and tinder-dry woodland remain a menace. She said no one has been evacuated, but 37 people have been slightly injured in recent days.
