  • Iran President Hassan Rouhani vows to end isolation as he begins his second term

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani officially started his second presidential term on Thursday, vowing to maintain his efforts to end Iran's isolation as he was sworn in by the Islamic Republic's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a ceremony attended by senior political, religious and military officials.

President Rouhani, who had a landslide victory in May this year will be sworn in for his second term in office.

Among the guests for Rouhani's inauguration on Saturday were Federica Mogherini, the European Union foreign policy chief, who has pledged to continue building ties with Iran despite mounting pressure from the U.S. to keep the country isolated.

Tehran says the new measures violate its 2015 deal with world powers that eased sanctions in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program, an agreement which Trump has repeatedly threatened to tear up.

Analysts said Rouhani may struggle to make a significant impact given sharpening divisions in the dual clerical-republican power structure, and Washington's return to an aggressive Iran policy since Donald Trump took office.

"We will not just stand by when the nuclear agreement is violated", he continued.

"The world should know that any breach of the deal will face a unified reaction of the Iranian nation and government". He has repeatedly criticized the slow pace of economic recovery since most global sanctions on Iran were lifted previous year.

In the meantime, the USA imposed sanctions on Iran have shed shadows over the outcome of the nuclear deal, with President Rouhani vowing to respond to the "US breach of the terms of that deal".

Discussions over United States foreign policy vis-à-vis Iran are continuing as we speak.

In recent weeks, the USA has imposed new sanctions on Iran nationals and entities, accusing it of breaching the nuclear deal, allegations that Iran denies.

Mr Rouhani won 57% of the vote in May's election after promising to create jobs and build bridges with the outside world.

Tehran's pursuit of ballistic missiles, controversial nuclear program, support for proxies across the Middle East and fueling sectarian strife has gained widespread attention across the worldwide community.

Commenting on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which was signed in 2015, Rouhani said: "The nuclear deal is a sign of Iran's goodwill on the worldwide stage". Officials from over 90 countries attended the event.

He called on Rouhani to emphasise the "resistance economy" focused on increased employment and national production at a time when the official jobless rate has reached 12.6 percent.

"The actions of the USA regarding the implementation show that the USA can't be trusted", Rouhani said.
