Grab a friend, pack a blanket and head outside Saturday night because the annual Perseid meteor shower is peaking.

Still, the Perseid shower has a history of producing "fireball" meteors, which experts say are easier to spot despite moonlight. The shooting stars will appear to originate from there.

"I think under good conditions you might see one or two a minute, probably more towards Sunday morning rather than Saturday".

Tadros pointed out that the astronomical phenomenon can be seen with the naked eye and does not have any adverse effect on human health, or on the planet in general.

The Perseid meteor shower will be at its height of activity this weekend.

The Perseid meteor shower is caused by meteoroids, bits of solid matter ejected from Swift-Tuttle comet.

US Navy Suspends Search For Sailor After 79 Hours
On Thursday, China said it helped the USA search for the sailor, a rare cooperative gesture in the disputed waters. The sailor was believed to have been reported overboard at 9 a.m. local time on August 1, Pentagon spokesman Cpt.

One other factor that may put a damper on the meteoric action is the fact that the almost three-quarters-full moon, rising shortly before midnight, will outshine some of the smaller, thereby fainter, meteors.

Another hurdle for viewing would be the rain clouds expected overnight Friday into Saturday morning.

Normally, around 80 to 100 meteors can be seen per hour. The space agency recommends that you "allow about 45 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark", then just relax, "lie on your back and look straight up". "These meteors are called Perseids because they seem to fly out of the constellation Perseus", Nasa said in a statement. A (presumably second-rate) repeat won't roll around for another 96 years, they say.

We are being treated to one of nature's most impressive spectacles at the moment as the Pereids meteor shower lights up the night sky, but you don't have much longer to see it.

"This year, we are expecting enhanced rates of about 150 per hour or so, but the increased number will be cancelled out by the bright Moon, the light of which will wash out the fainter Perseids", Cooke said.

However, NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke believes the Perseids will be a little more hard to see than expected. The moon won't set during the night time, so there's no way around the light pollution it will give off. However, we definitely will be able to see any bright Perseids that occur. The meteors are actually tiny dust and particles from the tail of the comet as it orbits around the sun.
