  • Uhuru Kenyatta wins second term as Kenyan president

Late in the evening of August 11, 2017, Kenya's Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission declared President Uhuru Kenyatta the victor of the presidency in the August 8 election.

The opposition, in asking for access to the election commission's servers, earlier said it will accept the results even if they show Kenyatta won.

The worldwide Elections Observation Group, which deployed 8,300 observers, said its projected outcome for the results had Kenyatta wining with 54 percent of the vote, 0.3 percent shy of the official figure.

The announcement of the final tally was delayed by seven hours and took place without representatives of the National Super Alliance (NASA) opposition coalition being present.

Amid the stalemate, the agents to the other presidential candidates appended their signatures and the electoral commission announced Uhuru Kenyatta as the president-elect for a second 5-year term.

"I extend a hand of partnership knowing fully well that this country needs all of us pulling together in order for us to succeed", he said. "Kenyans want us to succeed".

Incumbent's victory comes amid allegations of voting fraud made by supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga. I would like to thank all our supporters, staff, politicians, men and women who fought gallantly. To our competitors, we are not enemies. As with any competition, there shall always be winners, and there shall be losers.

Calm returned to most of Odinga's strongholds Sunday after police used live ammunition to quell protests and rioting that erupted when the election result was announced late Friday, according to Kenyan human rights observers.

Odinga said the supporters would better stay away from work at least for Monday until he makes his announcement. It was the most closely and nervously monitored race because of the violence following past presidential elections, notably in 2007, when more than 1,300 people died and hundreds of thousands were displaced.

Shortly before the results came out police officers fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters.

Senior opposition official James Orengo said they would not go to court to achieve this.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati declared Mr Kenyatta the victor of the presidential race at exactly 10.17pm.
