  • India, China 'preparing for armed conflict' over Doklam border dispute

The Indian Army and China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) held a flag meet at Nathu La last week to sort things out, but in vain.

Nearly 20 Km from the site of military face-off, the Army and ITBP personnel took part in the informal exchange of candies at Nathu La, but a ceremonial meeting between the sides did not take place as had been the practice in the past on the Independence Day.

New Delhi said it sent its troops because Chinese military activity in Doklam, near the trijunction of the borders of India, China and Bhutan, was a threat to the security of its own northeast region.

According to officials, soldiers from both the side have suffered minor injuries due to the stone pelting. But on both the occasions their attempts were thwarted by alert Indian troops, they said.

A source in New Delhi told Reuters, Chinese soldiers carried iron rods and stones.

China did not comment directly on the reported incident, but called on India to comply with earlier agreements and help maintain peace and stability along the border. However, China has refused to hold talks unless India withdraws its troops from the Sikkim sector.

The two nuclear-armed neighbours fought a brief war in 1962 in India's border state of Arunachal Pradesh. It said that India's desire to narrow trade deficit with China is "understandable" but trade remedy measures should not be used as shortcuts as it would "backfire". An article in the Global Times today criticised India's decision to impose anti-dumping duties on Chinese products, warning India should be prepared for the "possible consequences for its ill-considered action". Tensions along the LAC rose in 2014 when Chinese soldiers moved into territory claimed by India, sparking a two-week military stand-off that overshadowed a visit by China's President Xi Jinping.
