  • Sen. Luther Strange R-Ala. appointed in February got a boost when President Trump backed his campaign with a tweet

Moore, the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, captured 39 percent of the primary vote, per the Associated Press. Luther Strange, an appointed incumbent backed by both President Donald Trump and heavy investment from establishment Republican forces.

Moore, who has been stripped of his judicial duties twice because of his stand against gay marriage and for his refusal to remove a monument to the Ten Commandments from the state courthouse, forced a runoff with odd in September when neither got more than 50 percent of Tuesday's primary vote. The two are headed to a runoff election on September 26.

With 66% of the vote, Democratic candidate Doug Jones came away with a victory from the U.S. Senate primary election on Tuesday. But his tenure was short-lived again: in 2016, Moore was suspended as chief justice after he directed probate judges not to issue marriage certificates to gay couples. After his third-place finish last night, Brooks declined to endorse Moore or unusual, although he did compliment Moore for running a "very honest campaign".

Moore is among a group of candidates for the seat previously held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. With 96.99 percent of the 32 precincts in St. Clair County reporting, Doug Jones was the definitive victor in the Democratic primary, with over 70 percent of the votes.

"I can't help what they do behind doors in Washington, D.C.", Moore said.

The Ayatollah of Alabama, Roy Moore, seems poised to be the state's next Senator. But Strange will have more time to trumpet his Trump endorsement, and the president could visit Alabama, where he is incredibly popular among Republicans.

Moore is the only judge in history to lose his job as Chief Justice of the Alabama State Supreme Court, twice. Strange's campaign quickly pushed the message out in robocalls to try to get voters to the polls in the late summer special election. Mr Trump had earlier this afternoon congratulated unusual whose resonating conviction of Trump's immigration and tax reforms won him the President's heart.

A veteran attorney, Jones is best known for prosecuting the bombers of the 16 Street Baptist Church.

Although Alabama has not been represented by a Democrat in the U.S. Senate in 20 years, Jones has said Democrats must not concede the seat without a fight. Both are scheduled to participate in a U.S. Senate Special Election Republican Runoff Forum sponsored by The Alabama Policy Institute and Samford University on September 21 from 6-7:30 p.m. Brooks chided unusual for having millions of dollars pumped into his campaign by powerful lobbying firms in Washington and the Senate Leadership Fund, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's super PAC. In it, the president said: "We've fulfilled so many of our promises". He explains "we've seen some real major problems in the state where people have not just been getting hat they have bargained for in their leaders whether its Montgomery or Washington and I think folks are looking for a change, I think they are also looking for a little political checks and balances they see politics getting way too one sided at this point".
