Roger Federer used a dominant service game to beat Dutchman Robin Haase 6-3, 7-6, (7-5) in the semifinals of the Montreal Masters tennis tournament, here Saturday.

The 20-year-old German sprung a surprise when he defeated the Swiss 19-time Grand Slam victor 6-3 6-4 in an hour and eight minutes - only Federer's third loss in 38 matches this season.

Federer, who last month secured his eighth Wimbledon crown, had come into the match as the favourite and was looking to claim a third Rogers Cup success.

Federer, who was broken three times, looked just as frustrated to open the second set, hitting backhands long and freezing in his tracks as aces whizzed by.

Federer took just his third match loss of 2017, and he was clearly outplayed by Zverev, who won last week's Citi Open in Washington and has prevailed in 10 matches in a row. "I'm playing a lot, but I'm also working a lot with coach Marty Laurendeau".

Zverev improved to 5-1 in finals this year and 6-3 career.

Federer then responded to Zverev's cheeky dig in his runner-up speech.

"I remember the day but it just didn't come to my head until somebody posted a picture", he said.

It's the second Masters 1000 title of the year that the young German has put in his back pocket after the first triumph of this kind earlier this year in Rome over Novak Djokovic.

With the win, his world ranking will rise from 143rd to about 67th. "Even though, Zverev is a more experienced player than Shapovalov at this stage".

"I had a bit of muscle pain, aches and pains here and there, just because it's back on the match courts, on the hard courts".

Federer reached his sixth final of the year, and will be seeking a sixth win.

"It's going to be a little bit of a change to me", he added.

He was quoted by the ATP World Tour's official website as saying: "I felt all right all week". Shapovalov isn't playing completely flawless tennis, but he keeps coming away with the big points, hits impressive winners and is feeding off the Canadian crowd that provides that extra boost.

World number seven Alexander Zverev will be in action at the China Open in October this year, the tournament has announced.

Mannarino became the fourth established ATP player this week to fall at the hands of the 18-year-old lefthanded Canadian. I didn't, but I managed to win because I kept fighting. That took me, honestly, a couple of years to get more calm in my head, that I have to deal with it.
