At least 23 people have been killed and dozens injured after at least eight carriages of a train derailed in northern India.

Rescuers and local people worked into the night searching for survivors in the overturned and mangled carriages, some piled on top of each other.

"Twenty-three people died and 64 others were injured in the accident".

"We have mobilized all our resources to provide the best relief and rescue operations at this time", Saxena said on Indian television.

"Today a train derailed here causing coaches to fall upon one another", a statement issued by Uttar Pradesh police to local media said.

"The injured were taken to local medical facility", the official said. In view of any terror module behind the derailment a team of ATS of state police has rushed to the accident spot.

"Many people have been evacuated from cars safely. Some dead bodies have also been recovered", fire and emergency officer Naresh Kumar told AFP.

The train had been heading to the Hindu holy city of Haridwar.

Numerous train's passengers are still trapped inside carriages.

The Indian government in 2015 announced an investment of over 137 billion USA dollars over a period of five years to boost railways and modernise it on new lines.

India has pledged to build high-speed railways using Japanese bullet train technology and focusing on New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, with the help of £9.3bn in soft loans from Japan.
