  • Steve Bannon has called President Donald Trump's administration the most divided in history

After he was sacked as the President Donald Trump's chief strategist on Friday, Steve Bannon said he is returning to the Breitbart News website, vowing to intensify the fight he has waged against opponents of his brand of populist conservatism and he'll be "going to war" for President Donald Trump.

"I want to thank Steve Bannon for his service", Trump said in a morning tweet. It has been great!

A source close to Bannon told the Times that the decision was his idea and that he had submitted his resignation to Trump over a week ago.

He alleged that his absence from the White House will likely make it "much harder" for Trump to work with issues like "economic nationalism and immigration".

As chief strategist, he is believed to have pushed for Trump's travel ban on refugees and citizens from several Muslim-majority countries and to have urged him to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord, reports Efe news.

"The populist-nationalist movement got a lot stronger today", said Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlow. "The Trump presidency that we fought for, and won, is over", Bannon told the Weekly Standard.

Bannon's exit is the latest in a string of high-profile departures from the White House, which includes former chief of staff Reince Priebus and ex-White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, among others.

The resignation was to go into effect a week later, August 14, which was the one year anniversary of when he officially joined Trump's presidential campaign.

There was also probably one "mortal sin" that Bannon committed, Allen said.

Bannon was formerly the executive chair of Breitbart News, which fashions itself as a "platform for the alt-right" and forms a large part of the president's voter base.

"The longer they talk about identity politics, I got 'em", Bannon told The Prospect. "We're about to rev that machine up".

In his first public remarks after being fired, Mr Bannon said he still backed Mr Trump, but expressed doubt about the administration's future without him.
