McCain's office released a statement early Saturday morning that explained the lawmaker's views on Trump's full pardon of former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The White House said he was a "worthy candidate" for a presidential pardon. He ran and won a campaign to become Sheriff of Maricopa County.

One of the more controversial names in the news [VIDEO] in recent years has been former Arizona Sheriff #Joe Arpaio.

A Friday evening statement from the White House said, "Today, President Donald J. Trump granted a Presidential pardon to Joe Arpaio, former Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona".

"Donald Trump is an absolute coward for pardoning a man who engaged in racist police practices", said Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz. This would have involved an FBI background investigation on Arpaio and could have taken months or even years.

Trump's Spectacular Friday Night News Dump began a couple hours earlier when Trump signed an executive memo empowering the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security to implement his ban on transgender people from serving in the military.

"I said pardon or no pardon, I will be with him to the end", Arpaio said of Trump.

"I won't do it tonight because I don't want to cause any controversy; is that OK?" "These low appeals to hatred and un-American values, consistent with Trump's defense of white supremacists and neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, confirm that his chaotic presidency is propped up by a malignant ideology of hate, racism, religious intolerance and homo- and transphobia".

Arpaio tweeted that he was "incredibly grateful" to Trump, and suggested his conviction was "a political witch hunt by holdovers in the Obama justice department!"

This is Trump's first pardon in office, and it is unusual for a President to issue pardons - especially ones of such high profile - so soon in his first term.

Arpaio was convicted of misdemeanor criminal contempt for not obeying a 2011 order from a judge to stop his anti-illegal immigrant traffic patrols. [Crowd cheers.] So, was Sheriff Joe convicted for doing his job?

That, they said, "should trouble every American who believes that our duty as a nation is to continue working on behalf of equal justice". He faced up to six months in jail.
