  • Rising to the occasion: Trapped at work, bakers help feed Harvey victims bread

After sustaining more than 2 feet of radar-indicated rain from Tropical Storm Harvey in their area, Houston bakers trapped in their shop spent their downtime making pan dulce bread for flood victims. They baked thousands of loaves of bread, including the bakery's bolillos bread, kolaches and sheets of their signature pan dulce (sweet bread).

Alvarado said that although they did not count how many loaves were baked, he estimated that more around 4,000 pieces of bread were baked.

"We were trying to open up late and trying to make enough bread for everybody".

They were trapped for a total of 48 hours, using some 4,200lbs of flour, to make loaves ready for when the doors could reopen.

Meagan Michaelis, head of the bakery's social media, told WGN, "People were heartbroken, but happy to get any help at all". Employees at El Bolillo Bakery in Houston were among the stranded, stuck in their workplace for two days straight because of the storm.

The post was widely shared, with praise pouring in from around the world for the bakers' kind gesture. When the owner finally reached the group on Monday, he was shocked. "By the time the owner managed to get to them, they had made so much bread that we took the loaves to loads of emergency centres across the city for people affected by the floods", he added.

Hurricane Harvey in Texas may have had a devastating effect on Texas, but we've also seen plenty of hero stories, from the wonderful guys who rescued 21 dogs to these men on jet skis who came to the aid of an elderly couple.

The bread from their two-day marathon baking session was delivered to various shelters, including the George R. Brown Convention Center, and a police station nearby, Alvarado said.

El Bolillo has since reopened all three of its Houston locations - and the bakers who were trapped in the Wayside store have been busy fielding interview requests.
