  • Trump Jr. to testify in Senate, Manafort lawyer subpoenaed: CNN

Donald Trump Jr told Senate investigators on Thursday (Sept 7) that he set up a June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer because he was intrigued that she might have damaging information about Hillary Clinton, saying it was important to learn about Clinton's "fitness" to be president.

The President's eldest son met with congressional investigators for more than five hours Thursday, but at least one member of the Senate judiciary committee is saying Trump Jr.'s interview is doing little to ease their concerns.

Among the new revelations during August, Trump Organization lawyer Michael Cohen told the House intelligence committee that he emailed the Kremlin in January 2016, during the presidential campaign, to seek help with a proposed Trump Tower project in Moscow.

Eight attendees at the June 2016 meeting in Trump Tower have been publicly identified, including Trump Jr. and Veselnitskaya; then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort; the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner; Veselnitskaya's translator, Anatoli Samochornov; Ike Kaveladze, an American-based representative of a Russian real estate firm; Rob Goldstone, the intermediary who set up the meeting; and Rinat Akhmetshin, a Russian-American lobbyist.

"Love it", the younger Trump responded in setting up the meeting.

He claimed to have gotten "no meaningful information" from the meeting.

The New York Times first reported on the statement.

The lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, was at the time lobbying for the removal of USA sanctions on Russia; those sanctions had prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to ban all American adoptions of Russian children in retaliation.

Trump has denied colluding with Russian interests during the campaign.

US intelligence officials say the Russian government interfered in the 2016 election to help Junior's dad Donald Trump Sr.

Trump Jr., who entered the Capitol out of sight of reporters, also denied that he had colluded with Russian Federation during the campaign, the paper reported.

Trump Jr., who, along with his brother Eric, is now running the president's global business organization, arrived on Capitol Hill in Washington, and the meeting began around 9:30 a.m. The interview was being conducted by staff, but a handful of Democratic senators attended.

The Senate intelligence committee has been the main panel in the chamber looking into the Russian Federation matter, though the judiciary committee under GOP Chairman Chuck Grassley has intensified its focus in recent months.

Manafort met privately with staff on that committee in July.

The meeting was described to Trump Jr.in emails as part of a Russian government effort to aid his father's campaign.

Committee members Sens. Christopher Coons, D-Del., Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., were also seen entering or exiting the meeting.
