Tropical Storm Katia has maximum sustained winds at 45 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Along those parts of the coast, Katia's storm surge - the quick rise in water caused by a hurricane's strong winds - could raise water levels as much as 8 feet above normal tides.

The Mexican government has ended all tropical storm warnings.

Hurricane Katia has strengthened to a Category 2 storm in the Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center said Friday morning (Sept. 8).

The NHC said as a depression, Katia was blowing maximum sustained winds of almost 56 km per hour and should dissipate over the mountains of central eastern Mexico later on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the earthquake's death toll appeared likely to rise as authorities continued to comb through rubble in southern Mexico.

Spaniard Sergio Garcia and Aussie Adam Scott chose not to play last week at The Northern Trust but are back in action this week. Day has 14 top-10 finishes in the 28 major championships he has completed, including victory at the 2015 US PGA Championship.

The storm is expected to further weaken as it moves inland, and is expected to dissipate Saturday.

The death toll from Thursday's massive natural disaster off the coast of southern Mexico rose to 61 Saturday as emergency responders scrambled to clear debris, restore power and provide housing for thousands of displaced people in one of the country's poorest and most remote regions.

They urged people living below hills and slopes to be ready to evacuate.

The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning for coastal areas of Mexico between Cabo Rojo and Laguna Verde. At the same time, Irma strengthened back into a Category 5 storm Friday night, after weakening to a Category 4 earlier in the day.

Katia is the 11th named storm this Atlantic hurricane season and follows both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Jose - both of which are off to the east in the Atlantic.

Millions of Florida residents were ordered to evacuate after the storm killed 21 people in the eastern Caribbean and left catastrophic destruction in its wake.
