The Category 4 hurricane swept over the Florida Keys Sunday morning on its path to mainland Florida.

The good news in South Florida is that recovery from power outages caused by Hurricane Irma is now expected to be a fix job, FPL spokesman Rob Gould said Saturday at a mid-day news conference.

Florida Power and Light (FPL) estimates that 3.4 million Floridians could be without power during Hurricane Irma, which is now making its way toward the western portion of Florida.

FPL said it had shut down one of Turkey Point's two nuclear reactors.

Florida Power & Light Company said that almost 1.1 million customers statewide were without power Sunday morning. "This is a very powerful storm and every bit of Florida is going to feel its wrath".

Hurricane Irma leaves devastation and disrupts travel in the US
Martin was in the direct path of then-category 5 Hurricane Irma on Wednesday, the Washington Post reported . Others familiar with the storm's effects at Mar-a-Lago, including Trump employees, remember it differently.

Most Florida residents have not experienced a major storm since 2005, when total outages peaked around 3.6 million during Hurricane Wilma that year.

Duke has spent more than $2.4 billion on similar upgrades since 2004, including using "self-healing" systems to reroute power.

In addition, crews also arrived from Pacific Gas & Electric in California into Palm Beach International Airport and were greeted by FPL President and CEO Eric Silagy. But the effects are being felt far from the center because of Irma's size.

"We estimate millions of customers will lose power as a result of Irma", Mr. Gould, the FPL spokesman, said Sunday, adding that crews likely need to set up hundreds of new poles and string thousands of miles of new line. If the hurricane continues on its present track and strength, Florida's west coast could be more of a "rebuild" to restore power, he said. "We anticipate that restoration effort will be measured in weeks, not days".

He said 17,000 restoration workers from as far away as California and MA are already stationed around the state, but it will take time to rebuild the system.
