Penn State's James Franklin throws shade at Pittsburgh after 33-14 victory

Last week we beat Akron and it was a great win.

Penn State's players echoed their coach's "unrivaled" mantra after the game. If they get to the midpoint bye week with a 6-0 record, then the real fun begins.

But the offense, which gained just 312 total yards, took a backseat to the Penn State defense and special teams for a change.

Defensively, linebackers Jason Cabinda and Koa Farmer followed Allen in the tackles ledger with eight apiece, Defensive backs Grant Haley and Troy Apke - whom both had parents attend Pitt - hauled in an interception each and defensive end Shareef Miller had two of Penn State's five sacks. Pitt eventually became part of the ACC.

For that, Penn State figured it owed Pitt one. "When you look to your left and your right and you've got playmakers, and especially when you've got a guy like Trace McSorley in the backfield with you, you're confident in each other, and you're confident at any given moment the play can open up". "They turned our season in a different direction than we wanted it to be".

This is Penn State telling its fans: "This game doesn't matter, we don't need it, and don't get attached, because very soon, it's going away again".

After Penn State got revenge on Pittsburgh with a 33-14 win on Saturday at Beaver Stadium, Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin threw some shade at his in-state rivals.

He quickly explained what he meant, that Penn State takes pride in treating every game like a championship game.

Pitt and Penn State will play again next season at Heinz Field on September 8. Andnreally, Pitt hasn't been relevant in the national title picture since Dan Marino was throwing the ball all over the field for the Panthers in 1981. The Big Ten going to nine conference games has really put all of that conference's teams in a tight spot when it comes to out-of-conference rivalry games.

This is the first game this season that Penn State has been outshot, though the Nittany Lions held the advantage in penalty corners 8-7.

As for the larger debate - the rivalry-or-not-a-rivalry discussion that has been beaten to death - coach James Franklin rekindled it during his postgame remarks by saying, "I know past year for their win it was like the Super Bowl, but for us this was just like beating Akron (by a 52-0 count in the opener)".
