Anguished mourners filled the streets of the southern Mexican city Juchitan, which was devastated by the most powerful quake to strike in 85 years, as officials put the death toll across the country at 90.

In Tabasco, two children were among the dead.

The country has been dealing with twin national emergencies this week: at least a further 65 people had already been killed in an natural disaster, the strongest in decades. It was initially measured at 8.1 on the Richter scale but the magnitude was later set at 8.4.

At least 58 people are dead after Mexico is hit by its most powerful quake since 1932, which toppled buildings and sent people fleeing into the streets in the middle of the night.

Puente said rivers that flooded in Veracruz had damaged 235 homes and affected more than 900 people.

The southern town of Juchitan in Oaxaca state, near the epicentre, was hit particularly hard, with sections of the town hall and other buildings reduced to rubble.

At least 15 people died in the neighboring state of Chiapas, according to local authorities, while another four deaths have also been confirmed in the state of Tabasco to the north, reported Reuters.

Hurricane Katia is strengthening as it bears down on Mexico's Gulf coast. The other, an infant on a respirator, died after the quake triggered a power outage.

A study by the seismological service concluded that that quake killed about 400 people and caused severe damage around the port of Manzanillo.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported waves of 3.3 feet (1 meter) above the tide level off Salina Cruz, Mexico.

Mexico sits atop five tectonic plates, whose movement makes it one of the most seismically active countries in the world. The 8.1 quake off the southern Pacific coast just before midnight Thursday toppled hundreds of buildings in several states.

A strong quake hit southern Mexico around midnight Thursday, killing at least 32 people and triggering a tsunami warning.
